LECTURES
Week 1 - Netnography
Ethnography vs Netnography
Ethnography
Ethnography is first-hand experience as we are physically there.
Participating in activities. Able to meet each other face to face, getting
to know their characteristics. Ethnography requires a lot of observation.
Field notes are important in ethnography by collecting data, notes,
photography and things. Ethnography takes a long time as we need to
immerse with the culture and be present there.
Netnography
Acquiring responses through the internet. for example getting likes and
comments on an Instagram post. Meeting over video chat, being able to
understand their expressions. Netnography is faster as it is from the
internet where every information is there.
Week 2 - Culture
What is Culture?
The various types of ethnicity, different ethnicity easily stand apart from each other when we see how they dress in traditional costumes or by their features, Celebrations, festivals and other art forms that is produced in a culture, We only define a culture by the the visible part of it.
Signs of a Culture
Symbols- Words, gestures, pictures, or objects
Heroes- Past/present, real/fictitious. They also serve as models for behavior.
Rituals- Collective activities.
Layers of Culture
National, regional, gender, generation level, social class, corporate level.
Instructions
Task 1: Proposal
For our first project we are required to come up with a proposal to
give concrete ideas which are supported by research, for a final
design revolving a the theme given which is "Purpose" that reflects
our understanding and interpretation of global issues and design
aesthetics.
Important:
- Select a culture in society and find an interest for our topic
- Create a research topic, research problem, research questions,
research objectives and data collection methods.
- Write a 200 word rationale
- Create 5 preliminary ideas in sketches, supported by a short
rationale.
First meeting
"Symbolism and purpose of omen (Japanese mask) existence" was chosen
as our title as it was the most voted among us all. The specific type
of mask that we are researching on are Oni masks. The research aim for
our topic is to communicate the meaning and purpose of Oni mask to the
general public through design. For our next meeting we are supposed to
research on the symbolism and the purpose of the Oni mask and create
at least one design idea.
Second meeting
After getting our feedback from Ms. Anis in the morning we discussed
about it and we decided to change our topic to "Protection". Our
research aim now is to bring awareness to the concept of using evil to
combat evil in different culture through a design. The cultures that
we have choose are the Oni mask (Japanese), Medusa (Greek), Garuda
(Thai) and Evil eye (Middle Eastern). All of the cultural objects and
creatures we chose are mythical and has an evil origin but are used to
combat evil.
Third meeting
We confirmed the design ideas taht were supposed to create which are
the poster series, product design, magazine, tarot cards, brand design
and short comic. We divided each of the designs with each other I
chose the Tarot Cards.
Fourth Meeting
After a
thorough discussion we decided to remove Garuda from our project as
there wasn't many sources or references that connected him to evil
combatting evil.

After getting feedback from my groupmates i decided to change my
approach and follow the traditional design and recreate it in my own
way
