Visual Analysis
-
A method to understand design that focuses on visual elements and
principles.
- A way to describe and explain the visual structure.
- Visual Analysis is a skill that helps people read and interpret images and its a critical part of visual literacy.
How does Visual Analysis work?
Phase 1: Observation Phase 3: Interpretation
Phase 2: Analysis
Observation
- Looking
- Thinking
- finding good language
Looking closely and identifying the visual elements of a design, to describe a design accurately and carefully in our own words.
Analysis
To think about our observations and make statements about the work based on the evidence made by our observations.
Interpretations
- Observation
- descriptions
- analysis
-
Fused with facts of the design work and historical context
-
The meaning of the designs
- The purpose for it to be created

Chosen Illustration
Figure 1.2 Bride by WLOP

Figure 1.3 breakdown
1) Observations
This illustration is in a portrait format, and it has a variety of colours as well as 3 subjects which are the girl the floating crown and the skull. The girl looks sad and unenthusiastic while giving a hopeless look. She's wearing a dark coloured dress as well as a skull with ribs that is stitched on the dress at her left arm a dark translucent veil and a floating crown which is emitting slight light on her. There are also flowers on the skeleton as well as a very small stone on her necklace that is also emitting a tiny amount of light which looks as if she wants to touch the glowing stone on her necklace. The colour palette for this illustration is yellow, orange, black, grey, red, maroon, purple, light brown, dark brown, white, and peach.

2) Analysis
This illustration is A-symmetrical balanced. The emphasis is on the left which is the floating crown as it is brighter than the rest of the illustration. The floating crown lighting creates a contrast between the background and the face which makes the face to be the centre of attraction when looking at the illustration. The hair shows movement as there is slight curls starting midway all the way to the bottom whereas the top part of the hair is straighter. By looking down more there are flowers on the right side of her shoulder, and it shows repetition of the same colour used as well as the flower design. The texture creates a very realistic as well as an unrealistic sense when viewing the illustration. The colours used as well as the designs compliments each other which also creates a sense of harmony.

3) InterpretationsThis illustration called "bride" was created by Wang Ling otherwise known as WLOP in Hong Kong, China 2018. Wang Ling's work has a lot of value in his illustration which brings your attention to the ideal place where he wants you to see, his works have a lot of eroticisms as well as a realistic and unrealistic sense. There are also a mixture of fantasy and impressionism as well as semi-realism art style in his illustrations. Wang Ling illustration also reminds me of artworks made by Joaquin Sorolla where luminism is also applied.
Fig 1.5 "Sewing the Sail" By Joaquin Sorolla 1896
Wang Ling illustration are mostly done digitally whereas Joaquin uses oil
painting for his artwork nevertheless both of their artworks look similar,
Joaquin uses impressionism, realism, and luminism on this artwork whereas
Wang Ling uses semi-realism, impressionism, and fantasy. Comparing both
there is barely any differences between them as their art style are almost
similar, just like Wang Ling, Joaquin artwork also contains eroticisms and
nudity.
Fig 1.8 "Fantasy" art style by WLOP
Wang Ling's combination of art styles and his uses of value makes his
work a very intricate illustration, the subjects/ characters used in his
illustration are mostly futuristic, fantasy, as well as characters based
on books, anime, and games. Some of his works are based on
Ghostblade
and most of his works are very detailed and sharp but when looking close
the brush strokes can be seen clearly but when looking from far the brush
strokes can't be seen. His works also contains a lot of eroticisms,
partial nudity and action, where it gives the viewers a sense of awe or
feeling when looking at his artworks. He uses imagination as well as
certain characteristic traits to create his illustration which gives the
character life.
Part 2: Design
I decided to use "impressionism" and "fantasy" art style in my work since I always like "fantasy" based subjects whether in movies or art and "impressionism" since I've always like this particular art style. The first thing that popped up in my head when doing my art was the skeleton based on WLOP art and tried to do it in a different way. So, I thought of creating a ritual based type setting but not a ritual, then I came up with the idea of creating a skull on a "pot" that is made out of wood and leaves falling to show a "positive" feeling since the skull creates a "negative" feeling to create a balance between both. It is basically a grave, but the skull is floating on the "pot" since magic is lifting it up in the air, but it can’t be seen. I added flame to give a sense of wariness to not mess with the skull but the flame is actually a symbol of prayer.Sketch/line art

It was hard to analyze the illustration for this assignment since it is very complex I probably missed a few things from the illustration but i still got a lot out of it. This assignment taught me how to learn about the artwork of the artist as well as creating my own work based on the art style and influence from what i got when dissecting the illustration.
