LECTURES

Week 1

Ms. Noranis and Ms. Jennifer did a short introduction then later on briefed us on the work that has to be done during this semester.

Week 2 (character design)

Ms Noranis shared with us on Introduction to Character Design. Ms Noranis lectured us about what makes a character unique as well as finding shapes in order to make designs of characters, later on we learnt about colours and what colours can give off emotions on our character. We then got lectured about emphasis and contrast and this gives us a brief understanding on what makes our character unique and memorable.

Week 3 (composition)

Ms Noranis lectured us about Composition. Composition shows what makes the picture or photography looks so pleasing or eye-catching. There are 6 types of composition shots establishing, bird's eye view, framing, medium shot, close up, worm's eye view. The rule of thirds are applied in composition to make the art or photography more centralized. When composing a scene there are 3 spaces which are the background, midground, and foreground. Using contrast and detail will make the scene more understandable and clearer.

Week 4 (perspective)

During the period of Byzantine, Medieval, Gothic the art was rich and beautiful yet it had no illusion of depth and space. Filipo Brunelleshi was the 1st painter to use linear perspective other arts that has used perspective were "the last supper" by Da Vinci and "The School Of Athens" by Raphael. Types of perspective 1 point, 2 point, 3 point, 4-5point (fisheye). What are the reason that perspective are used for to create a sense of depth and 3D dimensions.

Week 5 (chiaroscuro)

The illusion that is created on a flat surface using light and dark is what chiaroscuro is. "Chiaro=Bright", "Scuro=Dark". Chiaroscuro is used to create dramatic tension, sensational effect, intense way to pull someone's attraction, negative vs positive spaces. It is also great for volume and value practice.

   INSTRUCTIONS

Exercise 1: Vormator Challenge

Task 1: Vormator Challenge

Figure 1.0 Vormator Shapes Template (27/8/21)

This Task required us to create a character of our own by using our creativity, we were told to use 8 shapes that was given by Ms. Noranis and Ms. Jennifer. We were not allowed to change the shapes but we were allowed to rotate and change the sizing of each of the shapes. We were required to start a rough sketch to search multiple possibilities of the character design then later on we will be using Adobe Illustrator to create the final designs.

Figure 1.1 Reference (30/8/21)

While doing my sketches I really didn't have any references and so I thought what can I find to resemble my character as well as using the references to help improve my character. Little did I know that this reference was not only the same as my character design it also helps for this vormator challenge

Figure 1.2 Rough Sketches of my Character (30/8/21)

This are the sketches of my characters I really didn't know which one to choose but after doing my 3rd sketch both Ms Noranis and I liked it so I choose my 3rd sketch to be my final design.

Figure 1.3 using vormator shapes (4/9/21)

This is Orbis, Orbis is from a planet called Mako. Orbis is a kind and nice person but people treat him badly because he looks different from others is Mako, Makonians only has 2 horns on their head whereas Orbis has 4 which is unheard of. Because of his horns people tend to make his life sad but only if they knew why Orbis had 4 horns they would never have even bullied him in the 1st place.

Figure 1.4, 1st Creation using illustrator (4/9/21)

When creating Orbis for the 1st time using illustrator was quite challenging as I have never used illustrator in my life but it was a fun experience. This is still a try out NOT the final design need more touch ups as well as shadings and gradients.

Figure 1.5, 2nd Creation using vormator shapes (12/9/21)

Figure 1.6, 2nd Creation using illustrator (12/9/21)

I decided to remove the long legs and shorten it made my character look less weird and it makes him look adorable at the same time.

Exercise 2

Figure 1.9 PDF inspiration of card designs (12/9/21)

I like things which are minimalistic even though people say its simple in my eyes its pleasing to see as there is not much going on and you get too see every detail of it. This are some inspirations of designs I got when browsing thru the net.

Figure 2.0 1st Sketch of Game Card (14/9/21)

Figure 2.1 2nd Sketch of Game Card (19/9/21)

I decided to use Orbis's planet as a clipping mask instead of having drawn the full planet as the sketch above.

FEEDBACKS

  • More exploration needed for the character sketches and name the character unless it shall be named as bob.

  • Back card should have more design and the name should be put at the front so that the opponent doesn't know what character you have.

  • Don't use planet's as solid colour make them more half visible by using gradient.

    REFLECTIONS

From these task I have learnt many things that even never even thought about. I learned how to use illustrator and its tools, I learned how to make a character by the limited shapes given, and I have also learnt how to make a game card which is so fun. The character I made Orbis I wanted him to be the good and cute looking person but when he gets angry or serious his true form shows but sadly I couldn't show it but it was still fun nonetheless
