GESTALT
Figure 1.1 Gestalt Theory by Dr Jinchi (31/8/21)
Gestalt is how the human eye perceive visual elements, they show how complex
scenes to be reduced to more simpler shapes, gestalt shows how the eye
perceive shapes as a single unit instead of multiple elements.
Closure-
The human eye tends to see completed shapes even if the elements are not
completed. One can create a complete shape by filling in the missing visual
elements.
Similarity-
Shape emphasizes on the subject, similar patterns and how we tend to group
similar shapes together as that is how our eyes and brain functions.
Proximity-
Related design elements are to be placed together and any unrelated items or
shapes are to be spaced apart. Close proximity are items that are connected
or has a relationship to one another to become one visual unit and that
gives us an organized or structured layout.
Continuation-
The human eyes follows paths, lines, and curves to see a continuous flow of
the elements more than the objects being separated.
Figure & Ground -
Objects or shapes are always perceived as either being in the foreground or
the background, They can stand out in the front (figure) or in the back (the
ground).
Law of Symmetry & Order-
This law shows that elements that are symmetrical to each other are to be
perceived as an unified group. Similarly the law of similarity suggest
objects which are symmetrical with one another are more likely to be grouped
together than objects that are not symmetrical with each other.
CONTRAST
Contrast is a juxtaposition of strong differing elements, without contrast
visual experience will be monotonous, contrast can show visual interest and
emphasize a certain point and expresses content
Arthur from the movie The Joker shows contrast on the suit worn by the
Joker as it is bright while the background is dull which help the Joker suit
more to the center of attraction.
The contrast is shown here on the chair, table and light bulbs as they are bright colours which makes it the center of attraction while the background is dull as helps compliments the contrast of the objects.
Exercise 1
Sketches
Figure 1.5 Rough Sketch of gestalt (3/9/21)
I thought and chose a flower design for my gestalt theory. I tried to
make it a bit simple and pleasing to the eyes so that there isn't to
much going on in my work. Following the gestalt theory I decided to use
Similarity and Closure to create my flower.
Figure 1.6 Ideation 1, digital sketch (3/9/21)
The first design I decided to go with was to make the flower black and the
background white. What I wanna show here is that the plain background
indicates day and the circle indicates eyeballs. the eyeball signifying the
colour white shows non- living. This shows that although the plants are
staring it isn't bothered in other words the colour of the eye indicates "it
doesn't care".
Figure 1.7 Ideation 2, digital sketch (3/9/21)
The second design I decided to go with was to make the flower white and the
background black. What I wanna show here is that the black background
indicates night and the circle indicates eyeballs. the eyeball signifying
the colour black shows life. This shows that the plants are staring but its
more obvious at night. What I want people to know from this is that although
plants don't have eyes they are always observing both day and night but one
is more obvious than the other.

Contrast
Figure 2.2 PDF of inspiration for Contrast (6/9/21)
In terms of contrast I decided to follow the same colour scheme as exercise 1. I decided to have a theme for my works and the theme I chose was eyes (theme is not required), so by seeing some examples on the internet I decided to create my contrast.
Figure 2.5 Sketch for design 2 of Contrast (14/9/21)
I decided to make another sketch for contrast. This contrast shows two expression one shows laughter the other one shows silence.

Figure 2.6 design 2 for Contrast (14/9/21)
This contrast shows two expression one shows laughter the other one shows silence. The laughter shows a white background showing a free and easy life with black eye pupil indicating life and, this shows that the laughter takes life easy as they don't go through hardships. The black background shows a hard and difficult life with white eye pupil indicating lifeless, this shows that they endure hardship and a rough life making them feel depressed and scared and this is why they are silent.

Reflections
Week 2: Learning about the principles while trying to intemperate it in
artworks was hard bun fun.
Week 3: Trying out variations of the principles instead of sticking to
one so I have more variety to choose from
